We’ve all heard our friends and family say that movies, novels or artwork have the capability of presenting a message of God within the underlying context of the work. But some might go as far to say as the artwork or story spoke to them directly, as if the Lord had intended for them to read it, as if the Lord had them purchase the literature so that he could share a bit of his wisdom that they needed to hear.
Whether or not the author or artist intended to put a message from scripture in their work isn’t important, because God can use what he wants to speak to who he wants. We’ve all heard of the expression perspective is everything. Personally, I can’t say that perspective is everything, but I can say something that is written in the Bible. If someone is seeking God in their personal life, he or she will spot God’s truth within the world around them. Those who seek God will find God if they are truly looking for him rather than looking for something they wish would be God–something that better suits their likes.
It’s possible to find God’s truth in more than a creative work. God’s truth is hidden in everything he has made. “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).
God desperately needs us to know him so that he can bundle us up in his arms. He is jealous for us, but he needs us to choose him. He needs us to choose him through faith. If we think that we are hearing God’s voice speak to us through things that he has created, things that an author has written or things that an artist has painted, then, by all means, respond to his call. Say a prayer to Jesus Christ, because he can and will use everything and anything, short of pure evil, in our lives to reveal himself to us.
Evidence of the Lord is everywhere on this earth. He hasn’t horded himself for only the rich. He hasn’t kept his qualities hidden in only the super exhilarating things of this earth. He has done everything he can to reach us in ways that we may not consider possible, because God is an impossible God. When nobody else is speaking the truth of the Lord, he will find a way to bring his truth to us, and he’ll do it even if the only thing he has available to use is rocks.
““When he (Jesus Christ) came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen… … …Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke (stop) your disciples!” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out”” (Luke 19:37-40).
