GraceLife Blog 37-Experience is Understanding

Jesus is the Son of God.  He is the son of the God (the Father) who created the heavens and the earth.  Christians say that God sent his son to this earth, and that’s true.  If we say it in a different way, however, then we might better understand it.  Here’s how Jesus put it:

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.  How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?  Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?  The words I say to you are not just my own.  Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.  Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. (John14:9-11)

Jesus is saying that he and the Father are one, and that his words are the words of God the creator.  He warns against those who do not believe him.  He says:

If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here.  I have not come on my own; but he sent me.  Why is my language not clear to you?  Because you are unable to hear what I say.  You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire.  He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.  Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!  Can any of you prove me guilty of sin?  If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?  He who belongs to God hears what God says.  The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God. (John 8:42-47)

In summary, Jesus is saying that people don’t believe what he has to say because they aren’t living their lives in a way that God desires.  God desires us to love each other and to love him.  Love is not sex.  Love is a choice in everyday life to either return hurt for hurt or return kindness for hurt.  The loving choice is to return kindness for hurt.  Love God and love each other even when you hurt.

The brightest side of all of this is that when we show kindness to the lost, they will take note of the kindness, and, perhaps, they will begin to live out God’s desire too.  Then, when they begin to live out God’s desire, the next time they hear his Word they will have the opportunity to truly understand it.
