“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).
Why is it necessary that believers in Christ transform their minds? How is it even possible?
The pattern of this world is simple. The agenda of every human is to live for themselves. Humans have a natural instinct to take care of themselves first. We want to go out and find happiness for ourselves. We want to find more money for ourselves. We want to feel important and accepted among other groups of people.
The problem with living a life for yourself is that it is not what God has called us to do. God has called us to be servants of each other. Christ was the ultimate servant. Nothing he did on this earth was to please himself. He was not searching to bring himself glory, but only to bring glory to his Father.
One way in which we can please God everyday of our lives is by walking in the Spirit. When we walk in the Spirit, we walk with the fruits of the Spirit, and the fruit of the Spirit is the ultimate servants attitude.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).
Those character traits are the ultimate servants attitude because all of them benefit other people. Who’s going to feel robbed when a person is kind to them? Who is going to feel left out when they are shown love? Instead of getting angry with someone and calling them an idiot, you can show the person patience and peacefully help correct him. This should be our act of service to God everyday of our lives. To get these character traits, simply pray to Christ that you may walk in the Spirit today.
